PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
Markus studied mathematics at the University of Vienna and specialized during his master’s in Geometry and Topology.
Born and raised in Vienna, he started his academic pathway by studying mathematics before differentiating into a particular field of study. Following the bachelor’s degree at the University of Vienna, he proceeded with a master’s program in geometry and topology, a field that can be summarized as “the study of shapes.” Expanding his interest through various internships, he discovered his passion for network science, a powerful tool used to explore interaction patterns of remarkably complex systems; for example, a human cell can be reduced to an intricate network of interacting biomolecules.
Motivated by this and a long-standing passion for the human body, he wrote his master thesis in collaboration with the Centre for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Science [1]. To further explore the interplay between network science and biological systems, he moved to Spain to work on protein interaction patterns at the Life Science department of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center [2].
The dynamic background of mathematics and bioinformatics lead him to this CANCERPREV program, where he will be employing topological analysis tools to elucidate the mechanics of gender differences in cancer progression.
